One of the most common questions we hear about credit unions is “How is a credit union different from a bank?” It’s a great question, and the answer goes a lot deeper than rates and dividends (though, those are important too)!
The most common answer is that credit unions offer lower rates on loans, low or nonexistent fees for popular services and pay higher dividends on checking, savings, certificates of deposit and money market accounts.
This is absolutely true, and saving you money is a top priority at Icon. But that doesn’t fully answer the question – to truly understand the credit union difference, we’ve got to dig a bit deeper.
Icon is member-owned and operated. Icon’s board of directors is comprised entirely of volunteer members who serve solely to ensure every decision we make is made with our members’ best interest in mind.
Icon is a not-for-profit institution. Rather than turning profit into big bonuses for executives, Icon returns profit to the members through lower rates, higher dividend payments and investments in modern technologies and services for members. Since our members are our shareholders, you get paid first!
Icon is a community-chartered credit union. Our employees, our executive leadership team and our board of directors all live, work and play in the same communities we serve! Simply put, our decisions are guided exclusively by the best interests of our members and our community.
The summer is heating up but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay cool with an incredibly low 2.69% APR* auto loan at Icon! Whether your old car’s A/C just isn’t cutting it in the heat or you’re just looking to cool down your interest payments, Icon has a variety of flexible loans and terms for you.
With estimated savings of almost $300 in your first year and more than $800 over the life of a $20,000 loan at the average rate**, just imagine all the things you can do with the money you’ll save!
*Annual Percentage Rate. **Average nationwide 60-month auto loan is 4.25% as of July 27, 2015 according to BankRate.com. Exact savings may vary depending on your credit history, loan terms and underwriting criteria. Click here for more information.
Coffee with the CEO brings together members and leadership
Icon would like to thank all of the members who helped make our “Coffee with the CEO” event a big success in July!
This quarterly event is designed to bring Icon’s members closer to our leadership than ever before, providing a new level of transparency in your credit union and ensuring your questions and feedback are always heard. Topics range from member perks and benefits to Icon’s history and our vision for the future. Bring your questions, feedback and recommendations and help Icon continue to grow and improve our benefits to our members and the community.
The next Coffee with the CEO event takes place at 11 a.m., November 6, 2015 at the Orchard Branch. See you there!
Power Lunch Series engages local leaders
The photo above might need a bit of explaining – at least, for those who haven’t met Megan Bryant (right), the enthusiastic founder of Zip Zap Zop and the Idaho Laugh Fest!
Bryant recently spoke at Icon’s Power Lunch Series, leading small business leaders and partners from Icon’s Select Employer Groups in some incredibly fun and engaging improvisational activities, designed to teach leaders to think creatively on their feet.
Zip Zap Zop provides a customized corporate training session using the skills of improvisation, and Idaho Laugh Fest is Idaho’s first and only annual comedy festival. For more information about Icon’s Power Lunch Series, call us at (208) 344-7948.
Celebrating tomorrow’s leaders at “Scouting Stars”
Each year, our partners at Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council hold a “Scouting Stars” awards ceremony to honor the top scouts and volunteers who have demonstrated extraordinary vision, achievement and leadership.
Our own Connie Miller – a Girl Scout veteran – had the privilege of presenting the awards to the scouts and volunteers this year and said she was truly amazed at the level of service they provided over the past year.
“These girls have shown exemplary vision as community leaders,” Miller said. “Age aside, the achievements they’ve made over the past year are admirable and they’ve absolutely earned this recognition through hard work, dedication and perseverance.”
