Icon volunteers pay it forward to the Idaho Transportation Department’s Broadway Bridge workers

As passionate supporters of the community, Icon’s employees are always looking for ways to go the extra mile outside of work and volunteer for great causes. And thanks to our long-standing partnership with the Idaho Transportation Department, we were recently presented with an opportunity to show gratitude to the men and women working tirelessly to complete the Broadway Bridge Project in downtown Boise.

A group of Icon’s volunteers picked up coffee and pastries to deliver to the Broadway Bridge workers at 6:15 a.m. on April 27th, simply to pay it forward and thank these hard working men and women. These incredible individuals from the Idaho Transportation Department, Knife River Company and JC Constructors are working through all temperatures and conditions to make sure the bridge is completed on time and on budget to bring a critical artery back online for the safety and convenience of Treasure Valley drivers and pedestrians … not to mention to ease congestion through the all-important football season!

Do you know of a person, project or organization who could use a little encouragement or recognition for working tirelessly to make our community better? Let us know! Email your suggestions to marketing@iconcreditunion.org.

Scammers taking advantage of credit card EMV chip confusion

Scammers are always looking to exploit opportunities that arise any time there is misinformation or confusion around new technologies, and we’re not surprised EMV cards have already earned that dubious honor.

According to the Arkansas Attorney General, a new scam is occurring where scammers are posing as officials from credit card companies and contacting consumers via email telling them their EMV cards are ready but they need to click a link to update their information before the card can be mailed. Do not fall for this – it is a scam! Icon will never, ever ask you for personal information via email or by asking you to click a link.

Here are some tips to avoid this scam:

  • Do not respond to any emails or phone calls requesting a credit card number or to update personal information. This information does not need to be provided before a new card is issued.
  • Hang up and contact the credit card company directly to confirm if the call is legitimate if you are asked to update personal information.
  • Do not open an email link without verifying the link’s authenticity. If you mistakenly open the link, do not supply any information. Only provide information through a company website if you have typed in the web address yourself.
  • Look for the “lock” icon on the browser’s status bar and “https” in the URL address to be sure information is secure during transmission.

The chip embedded in these debit and credit cards provides a helpful way to prevent credit card fraud. The technology creates a unique transaction code that cannot be used again; therefore, any stolen transaction numbers would be void and criminals would be denied if they attempted to forge a credit card. Electronic Transactions Association reports that an estimated 90 percent of counterfeit card fraud could be eliminated by using the chip cards.

Idaho Gives with Icon Credit UnionCelebrate Idaho Gives with Icon’s charitable partners

Idaho Gives Day is Thursday, May 5th, and Icon invites you to join us in supporting our charitable partners!

Our friends at Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW Idaho work to partner children with mentors to create a lasting relationship and strengthen both the families and the Treasure Valley community.

The Girl Scouts of Silver Sage have an amazing event planned where scouts and community volunteers will head up into the foothills to pick up trash and keep our foothills clean and pristine.

Junior Achievement of Idaho is working in more than 700 schools across Idaho and they’re pushing for even more! It costs $30 per student to put a JA Mentor in Idaho classrooms, so even a small donation can make a big difference.

The Treasure Valley Family YMCA The is committed to strengthening communities. Every day, they work side by side in the community to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to have the Y experience. For more information, please visit www.ymcatvidaho.org.

You’re invited: Magical Moments 2016 with Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW Idaho

If you’ve experienced the privilege it is to have a mentor in life, you know the value of having a reliable mentor to help you with life’s struggles, laugh with you through the good times and pick you up through the rough times. But while everyone needs a mentor in their life, hundreds of children across our community don’t have access to one.

That’s where Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW Idaho comes in, pairing children in need with qualified mentors. But it takes a lot of hard work to create lasting matches, and that’s where you come in!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW Idaho will hold their annual Magical Moments gala and fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 at JUMP in downtown Boise, and you’re invited to attend!

For more information or to purchase tickets, click here. The have an ambitious – yet achievable – goal of funding 25 new matches with the donations they bring in from this fundraiser. That’s 25 children in our community who will be matched with a qualified mentor to strengthen social skills, provide guidance through life and simply be a friend to these children in need. Your attendance of the event, along with your charitable donation, helps make this possible!

Icon donates more than 1,600 pairs of socks to Giraffe Laugh Child Care Centers

Our Warm Hearts, Toasty Toes sock drive just keeps on giving! This time, Icon volunteers delivered more than 1,600 pairs of new socks for infants, children and young women on scholarship at Giraffe Laugh, a local child care center that provides free or subsidized child care for those who need it most. Clean socks are an important contributor to overall health, so we couldn’t be happier to be able to provide multiple pairs of socks for each mother and child in need.
