History

Sixty years and we are still going strong. We are dedicated to serving you.

History

In 1952, seven employees of the Idaho Department of Highways started Idahy Credit Union with $35 and the idea of a credit union that was reflective of their values of integrity, service, and community. Sixty years later, Idahy is now Icon Credit Union and has assets of $160 million. We now serve over 16,000 members and have locations in Boise, Meridian, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and La Grande, Oregon. Icon Credit Union is a state chartered credit union, which makes membership available to anyone living or working in a county where we are chartered or anyone who works for an employer group associated with Icon Credit Union.

1950's

Located in Downtown Boise in 1952, Idahy’s membership grew to over 100 members within four months.

1960's

Membership continued to grow through the 1950's and in 1961, Idahy moved into the Department of Highways building. At this point, the first full time employee was hired to manage Idahy. Through the 1960's, Idahy added the Department of Law Enforcement, hired two more full-time employees and reached over $1 million in assets.

1970's and 1980's

Idahy’s growth was tremendous and doubled in size of members with just over 6,000 members. Furthermore, eleven more employees were added and Idahy’s assets grew to over $21 million dollars.

1990's

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in the 1990's and its 50th anniversary in the early 2000's, Idahy blossomed again through their growth in membership, asset size, and employees. Remodels and new systems were set in place to create a better member experience.

2000's

The 2000's have shown explosive growth with new locations, new products, and a new name. In 2003, Sho-Pan Hi Federal Credit Union merged with Idahy. This merger gave Idahy a presence in Northern Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene.  Only two years later in 2005, Boise Cascade Employees Credit Union merged with Idahy. The result was three additional branches to better serve members. These branches included what is known today as La Grande, Emerald, and inside the Boise Cascade building. Reaching over $100 million dollars in assets in 2006, Idahy launched a real estate department. In 2008, Idahy converted their federal charter to a state charter to expand their field of membership at minimal cost.  Additionally, Connie Miller was promoted to CEO of Idahy, with the retirement of Dave Berent of 29 years.

2010's

Another significant change came to Idahy, as it changed its name to Icon Credit Union. The name Icon was chosen because what icons stand for: respect, admiration, strength, and significance. Icon continued to grow as in the latter part of 2010, Icon began work on a new flagship Meridian branch. A range of new services could now be offered to members through Icon Financial Services and Accel. Icon Financial Services assists members with income and retirement planning. Accel Finanical Counsleing assists members by providing financial knowledge and training. The Coeur d’Alene branch moved to a larger location on Kathleen Street. The Meridian branch opened in 2011 and we have seen tremendous success in serving both Canyon County and Ada County members.

Through the years, Icon was blessed with a number of talented individuals to serve on its board of directors and committees, including Linda Slupe of 30 years and our longest serving volunteer of 47 years, Loyd Bell.
